Alpine has a little of it all. It has a history, a little wild and a little tough. It has a railroad that we know so well, being reminded of it pretty much daily. It has a cool school, or rather a university, that sits on the side of a hill, backing up to a hill full of big deer and nopal cactus. Alpine has a sky with clouds not like most clouds. Sometimes white cotton candy puffs, other times blazing streaks of golden rouge. Alpine has baseball, a classic old ballpark and a winning team, sometimes. Alpine has classic old buildings and run-down old ones too. It has jeeps and big trucks, lots of them. And a few good places to eat. Yeah, Alpine has a little and, oh yeah, sometimes a lot of it all.
FIRST BASE BLEACHERS
Three strikes and you’re out.
Now keep that at-bat alive.
Foul ball – duck or catch!

THE GROCERY
Beans tortillas beer
baloney bread cigarettes.
Old not organic.
COWBOY PRAYER
At the cross kneeling,
cowboy seeking safe travels.
Tired horse thinks pray more.

SHINY RAILS
Sunrise sneaking up,
Steel reflections from the east,
Incidence physics.
idowhatiwant
Nothing stopping me.
Cotton skies say yeah I’m free.
Hope the truck will start.

EL QUIOTE
Agave vida.
Quiote al cielo.
Chingon muerte.
HANCOCK HILL
Daylight dying soon.
Student hikers leave us be.
This is OUR sunset.

CROSSING SHADOWS
Crossing arms upright
at attention for the call.
Do we need the horn?
ALPINE DOGS
Dog and I early.
Long shadows reminding us,
long time til dog time
